How did you first get interested in fashion and why is it important?

I’ve been keen of fashion since I was around four years old. My mom always tells me how when I was a little girl I always wanted to be left alone in my room to dress myself on my own! I remember I loved to make quirky ensembles in order to unconsciously stand out, I guess. I will never forget when I wore my mustard tights with a plaid olive green skirt and a mustard turtle neck top. However, the moment in which my interest in fashion really grew the most was when I left high school. I realized then that fashion wasn’t about wearing the trendiest stuff mixed all together, but that the true challenge was to mix and match garments in a congruent way in order to express something. That’s why I think fashion is so important; it is one of the most significant ways to express yourself.
Also, it is a fascinating way to learn about different cultures and periods throughout history. It’s amazing how just by looking at how people dress in a certain era or country gives you so much perspective about their culture and way of thinking, as well as reflecting the type of society they live in.
 

What are your passions?

I have a variety of passions but I like to think they all lead to one main area, the creative one. I’m passionate about the creative process of elaborating an outfit, merging different garments and attempting to make them match or mismatch in order to create a whole ensemble. I love to take time looking at my garments and trying to figure out an innovative way to modify them. I find the creative process of writing poetry and stories irresistible. That is actually one of my favorite things to do. I also love illustration; the practice of drawing and expressing thoughts through artistic means intrigues me.
 

How do you describe the fashion scene in Peru compared to other major cities/fashion capitals?

Peru is one of the few countries in the world that has 3 regions; coast, mountains and rainforest. Therefore, we can find a wide variety of cultures, each with a specific and very different dressing ‘code’ due to the particular weather, believes, customs, etc. However, people in Lima don’t usually nurture much from these different cultures, thus turning fashion sense in the capital frequently monotonous. People tend to believe that being stylish is just about following trends they see in local department stores or mainstream brands from first world continents. Personally, I believe we don’t explore enough the remarkable clothes of our ancestors and contemporary cultures. Therefore, people tend to lack that eccentric creativity that you see in fashion capitals around the world. People need to take more risks!

We'd love to know how you achieve the ombre look with you hair!

What I did is pretty simple. I just dyed my hair copperish red and bleached the tips using a blue bleaching powder and 40vol developer. I applied it to my tips for about 10 minutes, then I added a little bit more to the upper part of the tips to create the fading effect for 5 more minutes. I repeated the bleaching three times on different days to avoid damaging my hair too much. I didn’t add blonde hair dye to the tips, they just turned that way! Now I only re-dye the top part every once in a while.
